Pino . . .Your magic will live forever

On October 24th, 2006 Pino took his show out of this world. He has now joined the great Houdini and other performers to entertain the Lord, the Angels and all of those who have been blessed with eternal peace. His short time on earth served as a great example to all of us who were blessed to know him. His selflessness and love for everyone he met was a testament of his good character and loving heart. Although we all miss his presence among us, here on earth, we all take comfort knowing he no longer suffers from his terrible illness, and that he has joined the good Lord as our new guardian angel to look upon us all and continue to guide us with his teachings of goodness.

Please contribute to this blog that I have dedicated to keeping the memory of my brother alive forever. It is good for all to share the individual experiences we have all had with such a great man.

The magic of Pino Gareri lives on.

Aldo.

I never knew Pino aside from passing in town as my office is nearby. What I -do- remember is a man who always had a smile on his face and who carried himself with confidence and charisma.

To Pino's family: My deepest condolences and my hope that while your pain will never fade, that it becomes secondary to the memories that he left behind.

Zio Pino, we love you very much and we will never forget all the joy and blessings you brought to our lives. Our family has always been close, so you've left us with tons of memories from when we were little to now that will always and forever remain in our minds. You've touched our hearts dearly. We love you! We hope you're enjoying entertaining the Lord in heaven with your magic.

I miss Pino's friendship greatly. I have fond memories of a man worthy of being called best friend. I recall the excitement I felt when we first sat down to discuss his Magical Arts Centre and all the things he had planned.

I was looking for a friend, someone who could talk magic and hang out and drink a beer now and then. Pino wasn't much of a drinker, but I do recall when we were in Vegas and I introduced him to his first Grey Goose Martini. He only had one, but said, "That was quite nice." He then joked to Jessica that he might just have to have a few of them.

I once wrote an article for Genii Magazine about Pino and The Magical Arts Centre. They kept telling me it would be published. It breaks my heart that it wasn't. I'm putting it online tomorrow at: http://www.starry.com/magic/pino/

One day Pino called me and told me that he needed some pictures for the local paper. I grabbed my doves and camera and met him at the shop. I will always remember Pino tossing the doves and me telling him "trust me these are going to be great." They did turn out great. Pino was a natural magician. He had the look and he knew how to hold his hands. That was important to him. I always told him that he could truly be a great one if he'd put his mind to it.

Pino once told me that he thought it was "meant to be" for me to meet him. I agreed it couldn't have been a better time in both of our lives. He was looking for somebody to help him and share his excitement about becoming a full-time magician. I was looking for someone to help with his magic life. I believed in him and his ambitions from the moment I met him. We were both teachers and students for one another. The sad thing is that we never really had a chance to show each other magic tricks and he never got to fulfill his dreams.

We spent all of our time working on the shop and making plans for the Magic Club.

When we first started working together, he insisted on at least buying me lunch. But I'd try my best to see that we traded off. He also insisted that we always walk to the hardware store because he was worried about my health.

At times Pino was a perfectionist. His art reflected that, so did his chandelier. But he was always so careful not to step on any one's feelings. It was always up to me to yell at the contractors that didn't do their job.

Pino, I'll miss you, buddy. But I'll never forget you.

    -Ace

    Zio Pino,
I will always remember all the great things you've done for our family. We were so blessed to have an uncle like you and to remain close as our family always has! You will be greatly missed along with all the magic tricks we loved, but I know you are now in a better place entertaining the angels and the Lord! You're a true hero for the fight you put up and now you can rest in peace knowing that we will NEVER forget you!
    I love you!

Pino has always been a great friend and teacher to me. I have learned so much from him both about magic and about how to be a confident and energetic person, and to always follow my dreams.

I can remember going to the shop, not knowing where and what to start with when it came to magic, and it was like he took me under his wing. He took soo much time and gave soo much effort to seeing that i learned magic, and also learned that it was how magic was presented that made a good magician. The presentation aspect of magic truely relates to being confident and believing in yourself.

I attribute a large part of my confidence to Pino Gareri. I can't thank you enough for what you have done for me.

Thank you so very much for helping make me the person i am today. I will always remember you and and consider you one of my greatest teachers.

    Sincerely,

    Christopher Testa

Pino was a great man, from being almost like a 2nd father to a great landlord and then when we finally moved out of 35 Mt. Hope, he was still a great friend. Although Fabby only met him these past couple of years, she too mourns as if she knew him as much as I have. Pino's kindness, knowledge of magic and respect for others will always live on through his children and we'll be here for them as a second set of brother and sister.

What can I say? We were close friends for over 28 years. We laughed together, did magic together, watched our children grow up together into fine adults even though it was not easy under both our situations. Our families even came from the same region in Italy and from that we both learned the family thing early on.

One of my fondest memories was at your parents 50th wedding aniversary party when you performed the levitation with your mom.

I'll miss you my friend but your memory will live in my heart forever.

I saw Pino before I met him, via one or two magic shows presented by Assembly 194 at the Emelin Theater and at one of the local high school auditoriums. The actual meeting came during the process of me joining Assembly 194 about 15 years ago, more or less. You know how someone stands out among all others, for one reason or another? That was Pino. I could tell by his demeanor, his constitution, his deportment. He was a professional. He had class and charisma. He was personable and an extrovert. Over the years I could see how he showed interest in others. He helped me in becoming a performer on stage, explaining the do's and don'ts, presentation, entrances and exits of magic. He became a very good and close
    friend,personally and magically.
He was a very good teacher. He was
willing to give help where it was needed if I had a problem with an
effect. He took the time to
    explain and show how something
was done. He was, as a part in the
song says, "a smooth operator". A well known Rabbi speaks of how
when we lose someone, that there is
a void which is created, and that
life can't go on the same
    without that person present. He
speaks of how when we lose a
trinket that life can go on the
same, but that when we lose a
treasure, life cannot go on the
same. And so it is with the loss
of Pino. He was a treasure. As
long as we can talk about the good
things, about our times that we
shared with Pino, his memory will
live on in our minds and in our hearts. But once we stop sharing our memories about him, his memory will die. But I know his memory will live on from one genration to another. My friend, Pino lives!

A real gentleman has left us, but not without leaving his mark. I met Pino via the phone. I was producing a show for 1 of our magic clubs in Manhattan and I had mentioned to Teddy Lee that I needed someone to perform and he gave me Pino's phone number.
I called Pino, told him who I was and asked if he was available. All he wanted to know was how much time I needed for him to do. Wow! How lucky could I have been. His performance at that show was truly magical. I will always remember his performance of the levitation and the beautiful multiplying bottles with the silks around the bottle necks. Those of you who saw him perform know what I am talking about. Those of you who didn't, well you missed out. I saw him perform several times after that over the years and he never failed to amaze and entertain.
I said at the begining that a real gentleman has left us. For me he was first and foremost just that; a real gentleman who had a great heart.
Pino, thank you for your friendship. I will miss you. Now take your place with the great ones.

I knew Pino for about seven years.
When I first went to his electronics store and found out he was a magician, I started taking classes with him. He was an excellent teacher and entertaining performer. I kept in touch with him over time, and he gave me a guided tour of the Magical Arts Center just prior to its opening in June of last year. Pino was a very fine man who had realized his ambition. It's unfortunate he wasn't able to enjoy it for longer than he did.

    MY ONIP

THE FIRST TIME I MET PINO GARERI, HE WAS MAKING AN ENTRANCE ONTO THE STAGE AT THE OLD MAGICAL ARTS CENTER TO BEGIN THE PERFORMANCE OF HIS BOTTLE ROUTINE. I REMEMBER THINKING, THIS GUY HAS SO MUCH CLASS AND STYLE….AND A BEAUTIFUL ACCENT.

AFTER THE PERFORMANCE I WENT INTO THE STORE AREA AND SAW A SIGN FOR MAGIC LESSONS. AND THAT’S WHEN IT ALL BEGAN….

WHAT CAN I SAY..I CANNOT BELIEVE THAT HE IS GONE…HE WAS A PART OF ME, SPIRITUALLY, ROMANTICALLY, MAGICALLY…IT WAS AS IF SOME COSMIC FORCE H AD LEAD US TO EACH OTHER, AND WOULDN’T LET US PART. THE MORE I GOT TO KNOW HIM AND HIS WORK, TH E MORE I ADMIRED AND BELIEVED THAT PINO COULD ACHIEVE ANYTHING THAT HE SET OUT TO DO….IN MAGIC, IN ELECTRONICS, AS A PARENT, TEACHER, CHEF, POET, VIDEOGRAPHER, PINO EXCELLED IN ANYTHING HE DID.

AND PINO WAS SO UNIQUE…EACH DAY HE MADE AN “ENTRANCE” ALWAYS DRESSED ELEGANTLY AND WITH HIS HAIR GROOMED TO PERFECTION. HE WAS AN AVID WRITER, KEEPING MANY JOURNALS OF DAILY ACTIVITIES AND IDEAS. HE WAS A PUBLISHED POET , A PHENOMINAL COOK, AN INVENTOR, A WONDERFUL EDITOR AND VIDEOGRAPHER, AND OF COURSE A REMARKABLE MAGICIAN. I REMEMBER A PERFORMANCE IN VEGAS WHEN ONE OF HIS FELLOW MAGICIANS SAID, I DON’T WANT TO BE LIKE PINO, I WANT TO BE PINO!

I AM GRATEFUL TO ALL OF HIS FAMILY AND FRIENDS FOR THE LOVE AND SUPPORT YOU HAVE SHOWN ME OVER THESE TEN YEARS. I AM SO GRATEFUL THAT I WALKED INTO THAT SHOP THAT DAY, AND FOR EVERY MOMENT THAT WE SHARED . I WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO LISTEN TO " CON TE PARTIRO WITHOUT REMEMBERING THOSE INCREDIBLE MOMENTS NEXT TO HIM ONSTAGE, IN LAS VEGAS, AT PIZZA AND BREW, AT THE MAGICAL ARTS CENTER, AND WITH HIS MAGNIFICENT FAMILY… HE WILL FOREVER REMAIN IN MY HEART…WHICH IS TORN AND NOT RESTORED….TI AMO PINO…SEMPRE

As I write this, I still can't believe Pino is gone. We met many years ago at SAM 194 and became friends. To his children I would say, you know how much your father loved you, and I know how wonderful you were to your father.

Pino was the kind of guy you liked to be around. Whenever I went to his home he, and his children, made me feel like a king.

Pino had style, a way of doing things that was wonderful. I am so happy I was able to see him in his theatre with his family and friends around him; to hear him tell me stories about his dream and how he made it come true.

Pino was a great man, a great father, a great magician, and a great friend.

I will miss him very much.

I got to know Pino pretty well as a neigbor on the "Avenue" and as a fellow thespian, he being in show business and my having been a professional actress/singer. He was one of the kindest, most genuine people I have ever met in that industry. When he owned the electrical repair shop, he would over-extend himself as a business man - very unusual in today's world - and "give away the farm" as they say. I mean that in the best way; he never overcharged, often comped things, loaned equipment without contracts, etc. His sense of trust in his community was astounding and it was obvious he cared about people so deeply that he enoyed the social aspect to his business more than anything else. I was most impressed with how he cared for the elderly gentleman who sat behind the desk of his electrical shop. Pino brought with him a gentility that is rare in the States. He was truly a European gentleman...and he was always dressed to the nines!

I will miss seeing his smiling face and hearing his friendly greeting. I know he was connected spiritually and that he is in a greater place. I extend my deepest condolences to his family. God bless you all and comfort you in the assurance of life everlasting, knowing full well where Pino is and for whom he is doing his magic.

I am deeply saddened of Pino's passing. I knew Pino from my days back at the Enterprise. I did many interviews with Pino, one of which is a personal career highlight - an "off the cuff" interview with him where he tried to hypnotize me.

Beyond articles, Pino helped me in other areas - whether it was fixing my television or more importantly, recommending alternative stress remedies or helping me with my job search.

I used to see Pino every day or every other day while in Hastings. I hadn't seen him for a couple years, and unfortunately after a communicating for a year or so via email - we lost touch.

I'll take this opportunity to just say Pino was a very giving man, a beloved father, a dedicated businessman, and respected magician. He was a genuinely good man- which is rare. We need more Pinos in this world. He will be missed.

    A Friend Lost

Some time ago, when I had the fortune to meet Pino at Mystery School. It was both our first of few. We only knew that we were meant to have met this way and our friendship kindled into flame and dwindled into darkness.

Over the years, we spoke and met and stayed in touch in little ways. Through some magic, business , neighbors , grapevine and mostly our hearts.

Pino was unstoppable. I never knew a man so dedicated to his family , his magic and values. He did not need me to be there for he was everything a man could be.

When I heard about Pino's passing, I was left empty and silent. He appropriately "vanished" from my physical life and I know that it is only an illusion. He is still here in all the words and pictures. He is still here in his memory left with each of us. He is still teaching, making us laugh and performing magic so we can live on with better lives.

Fare well Pino, my friend, I will always remember.

    Pino,
we all miss you, especially your children. you gave them so many good qualities and taught them all to love one another. i wish that you could be part of all the rest of their lives, but i know you will wach over them from heaven and make sure they are all safe. the love i had for you and your family was undescribable and even though i am not as much of a part of them anymore, the love i had will be there until the end. i always knew i had a place to go to when i was upset or even just to have a great meal. you were an amazing father, brother, friend, uncle, cousin, mentor, and an amzing magician. you could light up any room with only your smile. even though your're no longer physicllay here, i know that everyone thinks about you everyday and always will until we all can see you once again. please watch over everyone like i know you will and just know that you will always be loved by the world forever more.

I met Pino soon after I moved to Hastings 17 years ago. I brought my broken electronics to his shop and smiled at the fact that he was a magician and fixed electronics. Did he do it by magic?

Later I shopped in his magic store, saw him perform and marveled when he levitated Angela and did other amazing feats with elegance and ease! I always enjoyed talking with him.--what a gentleman, so warm, friendly and charming. It added immeasurably to our village to have the magic center and the beautiful new shop.

Walking by today and seeing the sale signs on the windows, I remembered passing by on the gala opening evening--how beautiful and festive it looked! My heart felt very heavy. There's no doubt that --whether we knew him well or just a little--so many of us in Hastings will miss Pino and his magic. My deepest sympathies to his loving family.

Our friend, Pino Gareri… with love from Jeff & Abbi McBride

That which is remembered never dies.

Jeff met Pino at the Mystery School. Pino arrived as a student, and a few years later, became a Master and a Mentor to many other magicians, continuing an unbroken tradition of passing along the mysteries of magic. Pino infused everything he touched with his passion for beauty and excellence. He realized his dream by manifesting his vision of opening a Magical Arts Center. His magic lives on in his many students that he taught, and in the audiences that he touched.

It was a real honor for us to host Pino and Jessica at our many magical events all over the United States, to move beyond the teacher-student relationship, and have them join us in our circle of friends and community. We were privileged to have Pino and Jessica in our home as our guests. Abbi and Jeff have many stories of our time together with Pino, and we will share these stories with many of our friends and students for years to come.

It is traditional that when a beloved fellow magician passes over into the Great Mystery, that his fellow magi perform a ritual known as the “Broken Wand Ceremony.” Recently, at a gathering of the Mystery School, here in Las Vegas, a number of Pino’s friends gathered in the Nevada desert to honor the life and memory of Pino.

We remember being in the desert with Pino and Jessica as the sun rose over the Eastern mountains in the Nevada desert. It was an exhilarating experience for all of us. We were all filled with the sun’s golden rays, and touched by the vitality and magic of Life.

Here were a few of the words that were spoken….

We gather in the name of the Great Mystery
    behind all life's mysteries.
The most incomprehensible thing about the world
    is that it is comprehensible.
    As knowledge increases, wonder deepens.
The final conclusion is that we know very little,
and yet it is astonishing that we know so much,
    and still more astonishing
that so little knowledge can give us so much power.
What is more mysterious to us
than our own art and craft?
The magician appeals to that part of our being
    which is not dependent on wisdom;
to that in us which is a gift and not an acquisition --
    and, therefore, more permanently enduring.
He speaks to our capacity for delight and wonder,
    to the sense of mystery surround our lives;
to our sense of pity, and beauty, and pain.
    So Mystery reigns.

The mystery we celebrate now is the birth, life, death and magic of
    Pino Garrari

    Pino was a stage magician,
    Magic Techer
    Mystery School Alumni
Father Dan, Jeff, Eugene and many of us here
Shared the fire circle with him
    He was a Father, Husband
    And an Electronics Wizard.
Recently he opened his Magical Arts Center.

    From time immemorial,
    the wand has symbolized
the mysteries by which the miracles of magic are displayed.
    It is the rod of Moses;
    the staff with single serpent
    held by Asclepious,
    Greek god of healing and medicine;
the stick entwined with two serpents
and a pair of wings --
    the caduceus of Hermes / Mercury;
and it is the wand of the shamans, Druids,
    and other ceremonial magicians.
    For us it symbolizes especially
    Pino's knowledge of magic's secrets
and his skill in their exemplification.
    He used it for misdirection,
faked it for special efe cts,
    but also wielded the wand
to connect the secrets of heaven and earth
and direct them in the service of Mystery.

May the energy coursing through the design of this wand
flow outward from its pieces and into us,
so that Pino's spirit and legacy
    may be honored
by our care for our craft,
and our care for one another.

    Goethe said:
The highest state that [people] can achieve
    is that of astonishment;
and when a primary phenomenon astonishes [them],
    [they] should be satisfied.

Pino was a primary phenomenon who astonished us and we are satisfied by him.

So let us deepen our wonder - about him, about ourselves, about our craft and the Great Mystery. So be it. Amen.

Pino was a real gentleman in every sense of the word. And a performer with great heart. He was a great example to all that he met, and I know he was loving and true to his family.

His magic was beautiful. He will be sorely missed by family and friends. I'm glad he's touched my heart. I will never forget him.

Jeff McBride and I had dinner with Pino and Jessica in February of
2006 during the World Magic Seminar in Las Vegas. Pino looked great.

Jeff and I both commented on his healthy appearance and his positive attitude. The future looked bright as we discussed his new Magical Arts Centre space. He was very excited about his plans and his enthusiasm was contagious. We talked about my coming to the Centre to give two talks later in the year.

It was not to be. Before the date for the talks arrived, Pino was put into the hospital. It seemed impossible. Everything had previously been so bright and happy.

Pino Gareri really was a special person. Probably everyone who met him realized it. He was genuinely kind and his kindness sprang from his deep humility.

I grew to know and respect him during the many times he came to our classes and events in Las Vegas. A few years ago, I visited him and presented a lecture and conducted a small seminar for his magic shop.

We had a wonderful time together for four days - including a special pizza. The trip, which Jessica said would take only about twenty minutes, in reality took almost an hour and twenty minutes. Pino and I teased her and we all laughed and thoroughly enjoyed the pizza.

I respected Pino's great love for magic and his willingness to work
hard to make his own performances truly special. And not only special.

Pino wanted - and succeeded - in communicating a sense of beauty
through his magic. He had the soul of an artist. In this, he was an
inspiration to every magician with whom he came into contact.

    We shall all miss him.

He invited me to stay in his apartment and he and Jessica made me feel as if I had known them all my life. He was nature's true gentleman. I am sure he did not have a bad bone in his body. It was an honour for me to have known him and I will treasure forever the memories we shared.

He will be sadly missed by all who were lucky enough to have known him.

To whomever is handling Pino's estate and/or effects: I just read in the Smoke and Mirrors web site that Pino's shop is closing and that he passed away. I guess I'm behind the news here. I've been away and living part time in Canada. I just want to pass on my sympathies for his living relatives and friends. I liked Pino very much. I went to a lecture at his shop and dinner in his home as well as working with him on his act. I found him to be a very special man; elegant, hard working, a lover of the magic arts, and outstanding in every way. Certainly a true gentleman. I am very sorry that he is no longer with us. I am sure he enlightened and motivated many people with his passion and dedication to the art. I will miss him.

Please pass on my sympathies. Thank you.

I only found out about Pino's passing a few weeks ago. It was truly a shock because I hadn't known he was ill.

I met Pino at Mystery School and again at the Phoenix Gathering. I also attended a couple of lectures at The Magical Arts Center. Although I didn't know him well, I was impressed with his elegant presence, both onstage and off. In the often competitive world of magic, I never heard an unkind word from or about him. His love of magic always shone forth.

My heart goes out to his family and to Jessica. I cannot begin to imagine the depth of their loss. Time will soften the pain, but his absence will always be felt. He will live on in so many magical memories.

Its hard to believe I only met Pino and Jessica a few times, because the feeling I always had for both of them was one of closeness. They came to our convention The Phoenix Gathering, and all of us shared so much at those events, forming a special bond. When I got the terrible news, Pino's face came to me with such detail, along with his smile. He had such a warm, loving energy. My deepest condolences to his children, his family, and to Jessica, who are all forever connected to Pino through the love they shared on this plane and beyond.

Circa 1998: I walk into the Magical Arts Center for the first time and meet Pino. He graciously helps me (a college-kid, newbie magician at that time) select items for my first children's show. This would be the first of many visits over the next couple of years...

March 2005: I stop by the store to say bye before I move to the west coast. He bids me farwell and good luck, and I tell him that I'll definitely miss the place, him, and his friendly staff. I never thought in a million years that this would be the last time I would see him...

March 2007: I plan my first trip back to New York in over two years. I remember telling myself, I definitely have to visit Pino and say hi...

Today 5/26/07: I'm finally back in New York. I drive down to Hastings. I walk up to the store and encounter a few signs on the door and windows. They announce Pino's passing.....My heart sinks, and I could swear that for a moment, it even stopped. I am truly sad today. Pino, I'm gonna miss you man! :-( And my deepest (belated) condolences to the Gareri family.

    Sincerely,
